As the nature of conflict changes, so the technological burden on the modern soldier is increased. Military equipment for communications and other portable applications currently rely on rechargeable batteries. Under operational conditions, recharging using bulky conventional generators poses both a logistical problem and a serious danger, as associated noise and emissions can be detected by the enemy.

Voller Energy’s VE10M military fuel cell has been created to specifically address the logistics and power sources area of Future Integrated Soldier Technology (FIST), the next stage of the UK's soldier modernisation programme. The charger is designed to fit into the webbing of FIST project equipment used by soldiers in the field.

Voller Energy has also developed Emerald, a highly efficient battery recharging station based on fuel cell technology, which creates very low emissions and is virtually silent in operation. Emerald runs on propane, butane and LPG.

Possible future developments will allow the use of JP-8, the new single battlefield fuel being adopted by the US Military and NATO.

Whether vehicle-based or as a stand-alone unit, Emerald monitors power consumption and automatically maintains the batteries at full capacity – constantly ready to recharge on-board communications equipment or portable equipment batteries.

Optional specifications may also provide hot water, space-heating and cooling functions as well as providing remote diagnostic capabilities. Potential applications range from field hospitals to field kitchens – any environment which needs quiet, emission-free power.
